This week’s installment of The Beat Bash will be posted on Saturday. In the meantime, I’d like to share this 12″, which appeared in an earlier episode.
David Diebold was an associate of Patrick Cowley who worked for the legendary Megatone Records, and in the early ’90s was running the label. He wrote the definitive book covering San Francisco’s golden years of dance music, titled Tribal Rites: The San Francisco Dance Music Phenomenon 1978-88 (good luck finding a copy – the cheap ones run $150). After collaborating on numerous Megatone projects, he released his debut solo album Sex Technology in 1990. It had a Hi-NRG sound which was dated even then, but featured a fairly faithful cover of Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit. While not all that remarkable, the subsequent Club Mix became a crowd favorite of The Metro’s afterhours, and in turn ended up on The Beat Bash.
Kim Cataluna handles the vocal on White Rabbit, and the remixes of Dance Right Back Into Heaven feature fellow Megatone artist Ernest Kohl.
The restoration job here was done by Bruce Bartlett, who remastered all the New Order singles for the Recycle project. Please to enjoy!

I’m really excited about this installment of The Beat Bash, which is slower, darker, and harder. The BPM averages 94 beats per minute. The slow stuff can often be challenging to mix, but my favorite episode to date is the one from January 9th, which is also slow BPM (around 105). I’ve listened to that one 2:1 over any other episode.

I learned how to mix records in the production booth at WRFL by using two copies of the same 12″ single, getting them synched up, and crossfading between them. I thought I was pretty good, and tried doing it live on the air starting with my very first show, but man, I sucked.
However, I’d already been doing general format shows for a couple of years, and they were not mixed. I did non-mixed sets on The Beat Bash too, and that’s what we have here. Beatmixing only works when songs are about the same speed, or beats per minute. Sometimes I wanted to put songs together that varied wildly in speed, but told a story…maybe not in the literal sense, but certainly in tone and mood.
Hot Doggie was the first song in the very first promo for the show, back when Brian and Michelle were the hosts. Higher Than The Sun was frequently my first song when I would pick up early morning shifts (6am-8am) at the station during summer and/or winter breaks. Kool-Aid is a big shout-out to Brian F., and This Corrosion is for Ned and Kate (oh no, The Beat Bash has been Raggetted!).

Here we have two of the three spinoff projects of Throbbing Gristle (the third – Coil – will make its first appearance in March), the man behind the hit single Mr. Vain before he started working as Culture Beat, Gary Numan in an unlikely collaboration (that should have been a much bigger single), a Violator-era B-side from Depeche Mode, a husband and wife duo who barely released one proper album, the godfather of Detroit techno, a band that embodied ’80s excess paired with the UK production team who did the same, an album cut by Propaganda’s lead singer which should have been a single, and Bananarama.

Sometimes a mix just comes together with a real groove, and feels effortless. I love this one. The transition from Losing My Mind to Blow The House Down was always a personal favorite.
Heavenly Bodies was recorded by Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. Jamie Dee’s Burnin’ Up is built around a sample from Magic’s Wand by Whodini, a 1982 hip hop track that was co-written and produced by Thomas Dolby.

Sorry this week’s mix is running late. I’m getting it in just under the wire.
I was laughing with my husband about it being unintentionally gayer than normal, what with Erasure, Paul Lekakis, and Marc Almond twice. Tears Run Rings is the track I wanted to build this mix around, and I went through three entirely different sets before arriving at this one.
Revolting Cocks is my favorite Wax Trax band, and the Fatima Mansions remix is a promo-only done by Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto – it’s actually my favorite remix he ever did for anyone (including himself).

Due to unforeseen technical difficulties, this week’s installment of The Beat Bash will be posted on Saturday. As a teaser, I’d like to share this 12″, which is considered one of the Beat Bash classics.
Little is known about They Never Sleep, although I have a sneaking suspicion that Barry Harris was involved. They were a Canadian band with mysterious names like Neves Silva and Asia Minor, and only released this one single, which is 9-plus minutes of HI-NRG in the mold of New Order’s The Perfect Kiss. It was released independently, and I can’t imagine many copies were pressed, but the song found a wider audience when Kon Kan covered it in a jazzy style on their debut album.
