“Sin is the nail in the soft wood of my soul…”

Here we have two of the three spinoff projects of Throbbing Gristle (the third – Coil – will make its first appearance in March), the man behind the hit single Mr. Vain before he started working as Culture Beat, Gary Numan in an unlikely collaboration (that should have been a much bigger single), a Violator-era B-side from Depeche Mode, a husband and wife duo who barely released one proper album, the godfather of Detroit techno, a band that embodied ’80s excess paired with the UK production team who did the same, an album cut by Propaganda’s lead singer which should have been a single, and Bananarama.

“I collect, I reject, memorabilia…”

This installment of Past>Forward is really just a collection of older tracks I’ve been revisiting lately. The Belouis Some album was just reissued on CD with a bunch of remixes included, and I’ve recently picked up remastered discs by Thompson Twins, OMD, and Ultravox.

A lot of these songs bring to mind specific people, so this one is for Brian F, Joe, Paul, Jason, Sean, Pete, and the original Beat Bash DJs Brian P and Michelle.

“It was acceptable in the ’80s…it was acceptable at the time.”

This is the most retro-sounding mix I’ve done that doesn’t actually use music from the ’80s. I think everything here was released within the last two years; most of them were released within the last few months. True there are some artists who reached their peak in the ’80s – Bananarama, Camouflage, Douglas McCarthy (Nitzer Ebb) – but it’s more of a feeling: the drums are louder, the basslines are fatter, the keyboards are older. I hear shades of Talking Heads, Tanz Waffen, and Re-Flex.

Apart from Kiss The Future Vol. 1 this is the closest I’ve gotten to “Jeb’s sound”.

I was asked to mix one of the door prize CDs to be given away at Kavity, an 80’s-themed party in San Francisco. Some of these songs were in my final set – others weren’t. I tried to strike a balance between original mixes of classic tracks, some edgier fare, and new mixes of old favorites. I wanted it to be retro without feeling tired and boring.

Kavity was the 2nd of 3 annual parties: Kandy, Kavity, and SugarKRASH.
