“Try so hard to be approachable, I’m a nice guy underneath it all…”

I wasn’t even thinking about Valentine’s Day when picking these tracks, so it’s sheer coincidence that there’s a lot about love – both cynical and heartfelt.

“Each and every one of you, make it internal!”

It was not uncommon on The Beat Bash for a pop band like Duran Duran to rub shoulders with a much harder act like The Final Cut (with vocals provided by Chris Connelly, of Revolting Cocks/Ministry/Wax Trax fame – and formerly of Finitribe).

“On a magical starry night, your beauty shines so bright…”

Volume 13 brings around a meshing of old and new: a reworked Bowie track from ’83, a 10-year old track from Duran Duran, new offerings from Chicago house legend Jamie Principle and from Tracey Thorn, meshed with newer artists like Rex The Dog, Kissy Sell Out, The Hacker, and Digitalism. It’s sort of an odd mix because it veers from smooth melodic sounds to the abrasive aesthetic that – unfortunately – is being called “new rave”.

Thanks as always to DJ Agent Adam for tipping me off to The Similou…but I found the Hi-Tack track before you played it for me at the Folsom Street Fair, betch! ;)
