“Omina, doke doe ominea…”

At one time I’d found an article on the web where the members of Big Pig gave the translation of that phrase, but for the life of me I can’t find it. Maybe it was Aboriginal in origin?

This week’s mix is back to basics. Sometimes I tend to over-think the tracks, but really, this is what a typical episode of the show sounded like. This is why we had an audience.

“Gold is the color, in concentrate / Power in its purest state…”

I’m really excited about this installment of The Beat Bash, which is slower, darker, and harder. The BPM averages 94 beats per minute. The slow stuff can often be challenging to mix, but my favorite episode to date is the one from January 9th, which is also slow BPM (around 105). I’ve listened to that one 2:1 over any other episode.

You Me And Everything (Else) by The Shamen

“Each and every one of you, make it internal!”

It was not uncommon on The Beat Bash for a pop band like Duran Duran to rub shoulders with a much harder act like The Final Cut (with vocals provided by Chris Connelly, of Revolting Cocks/Ministry/Wax Trax fame – and formerly of Finitribe).

I Was Born To Love You (Max Tundra Remix)

“Fat bottomed girls you make the rockin’ world go ’round”

Three of these tracks have previously appeared in the Kiss The Future series, making Queen the artist who has appeared the most. I was really surprised once I realized that because I’d have assumed it was New Order, The Knife, Depeche Mode, or anyone else!

New York At Last is essentially a new Queen track in the same way that Free As A Bird was a new Beatles track. It started as one of Freddie’s demos, and by carefully sampling and layering guitar, bass, and drum parts from other Queen songs then merging the results with an electro synth line reminiscent of Radio Ga Ga (it is, in fact, the synth line from the remix of Love Kills which follows it) Smash made it made something good enough that it could have been a single.

Remember when DFA was going to save indie rock? I was particularly fond of The Rapture and had just fallen in love with The Juan Maclean. Now it’s five years later and Tim Goldsworthy has left DFA after producing the brilliant Hercules And Love Affair album, while James Murphy has released his third (and supposedly final) disc.
